From a very early age, founder and owner, Birgit Gunz was passionate about baking, and  still cherishes childhood memories of her mother and grandmother teaching her to bake.

Although having a successful career in the City, Birgit decided it was time to turn her passion for baking – which had never disappeared – into reality. In 1998 she opened her first bakery and shop in Wimbledon Village, south west London. 

“When I moved to the UK from Germany in 1986, I found a very different type of bread from that to which I was accustomed. I ended up with a freezer full of rye bread and sourdoughs that I’d brought from Frankonia when I visited my parents and I even thought back then that I ought to start my own bakery, introducing Continental breads to the UK market”, She says.

Eventually, Birgit made the decision to leave her successful career behind, and took the leap to open her own bakery selling all those types of bread she loved so much… and she hasn’t looked back since.

In 1998, Frankonia The Breadhouse was born...

Initially operating out of a small high street bakery in Wimbledon Village, the bakery has since expanded into the wholesale market and distributes not only in Central London, but also across the country, to its many prestigious customers.

Although initially involved in retail, the plan had always been to launch into the wholesale market. Wholesaling from the shop in its second year, this part of the business saw rapid expansion, with demand consistently rising for Frankonia products as its reputation grew.

Soon, the small bakery premises became inadequate to satisfy the demand, and it necessitated a move to much bigger premises, where Frankonia is based today.

The Present....

Frankonia now supplies a variety of clients at the top tier of the catering world: Five-star hotels, gentlemen’s clubs, catering companies throughout London and the Home Counties. These are serviced with daily deliveries by Frankonia’s own vans, with deliveries further afield in the UK being very efficiently handled by a third-party network.

Frankonia are very proud to announce that our Cocoa Butter Biscuits have just won a
Gold Award at the Great British Food Awards 2020.

Members of the public can now access these exclusive products through the website and, in the near future, through their own shops as Frankonia enter the retail sector again. Watch this space for updates and news on their first opening in Spring of 2021.

– to augment the business with carefully chosen retail outlets, and concessions as appropriate
